Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is one of the Rio Grande Pueblos in Northern New Mexico. Artists of Santo Domingo are known for their heishi necklaces, which are discs of shell or stone that have been ground, drilled, and strung. Many of the children from Santo Domingo acquire drills and learn to make beads at a very young age. Artists of Santo Domingo also craft inlay jewelry made with a variety of stones on shell and wood bases. Traditionally shell, turquoise, jet, and coral were used, but today other precious and non-precious materials are incorporated in their jewelry.
