In the 1880s, the Navajo silversmiths focused on making concho belts, bow guards, bracelets, necklaces and tobacco flasks. Today the metalwork is endless, with the addition of rings, earrings, pins, hair ornaments, and bolos. Since about 1880, Navajos have adorned their jewelry with turquoise. They believe that wearing turquoise brings good fortune and insures favor with the Yeis, so turquoise plays many roles in of their healing ceremonies and sand paintings. Today, Navajo silversmiths use a variety of stones and shells in their jewelry. |
