Other SW Artists
In the Southwest, there are many silversmiths and jewelers that have explored and refined their craft. Cochiti Pueblo is known for their drums and pottery, yet there are some innovative silversmiths producing beautiful jewelry. No longer restricted by their location, Hopi silversmiths have rapidly improved and expanded their techniques. In 1938, the “overlay” technique was created and it involved the cutting of designs in a heavy gauge silver sheet and then soldering it to a solid silver sheet. Most of the overlay designs were adapted from pottery shards. Other local artists string beads from all over the world to make colorful jewelry. As the ingenuity and adaptability exists, so does the superb creativity of these jewelers. |
