Over the centuries, Native American jewelry has become more innovative in design and sophisticated in technique. The Navajos are known for their silverwork that include, but are not limited to, techniques of hammering, etching, repousee, and stamp work. The Zunis, who are excellent lapidaries, have slowly refined their work to include channel inlay and cluster work. Artists from Santo Domingo are known for their fine grinding of turquoise, coral, and shell beads into smooth heishi necklaces. Hopi silversmiths have mastered the “overlay” technique. Yet today, many artists may incorporate other tribes’ styles into their own artwork. |
