Folk Art
Since the 1870s, Navajo folk art has rapidly changed from simple mud toy figurines to the art of fine wood carvings that depict animals or Navajo life. The mud figures were made by Navajo parents to teach their children about the Navajo life, values, and traditions. Today Navajo folk art illustrates how the Navajos view their world, people, animals, and spirits in a colorful and whimsical style.
Navajo folk art can be categorized as fine art or folk art. Many artists have created fanciful art pieces while others carve with the simplest of tools. Most Navajo folk art is carved out of cottonwood, yet other art medias include sandstone, mud, paper cut outs, and other materials. Navajo folk art will continue to flourish, as it brings laughter along with an awareness of Navajo culture.
