Beadwork

The metamorphisis of Zuni beadwork, from the inexpensive curios of the 1930's, to the detailed folk art figures of today, is truely amazing. Zuni Beadwork has transformed from beaded trinkets to vibrant, detailed representations of animals, dancers, and contemporary subjects. This art form was initially done solely by the women of Zuni. Currently, men have become skilled beaders, and the younger generations have branched out to bead new and exciting subjects. From traditional horses beaded over forms carved from the root of dead cottonwood trees, to corn maidens and buffalo dancers, to beaded Santas, and pumpkins and witches for Halloween, there is a beaded figure for every occassion. The detail, colors, imagination, and craftmanship used in creating these beaded figures has evolved into a valuable and respected form of folk art.
